Properties Master/Properties Artisan
About Julia:
I am a Properties Master / Artisan currently living the Washington DC area. I recently earned my Masters of Fine Arts in Theater Production with a focus in Properties Production and Management from Ohio University. While at Ohio I honed my skills as an artisan working on a wide variety of projects for shows and coursework ranging from weapons and armor to furniture and puppets. I also had the opportunity to props master several productions culminating in my master thesis as the Properties Master for Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812. After graduating I returned to Utah Shakespeare Festival to work my second season as a Properties Artisan and act as the Properties Master for their production of The Tempest. Working for USF has helped me grow my skills and confidence as an artisan and a theater professional.
In 2013 I received my BFA in Scenic and Lighting Design with a concentration in Properties Design from The Conservatory at Shenandoah University, in Winchester, Virginia. In my time at Shenandoah, I worked as the Properties Master for seven shows Including Noises Off, Into the Woods and Summer and Smoke. At the same time, I was working as a Work-Study technician in the scene shop which consisted of helping to build the scenery for every show while teaching freshman stagecraft students about tools and basic construction techniques. In my class work at Shenandoah I learned a wide array of skills from Vectorworks and Photoshop to finish carpentry and upholstery. During the summers I worked with Shenandoah Summer Music Theater starting as a general technician and then working my way up to Props Master.
After graduating I worked another season with Shenandoah Summer Music Theater as the Properties Master before going to work with Omaha Theater Company at the Rose Theater as the Paint/Props Intern. One of my biggest accomplishments while at The Rose was designing, building, propping and performing in a show called Balloonacy. That experience taught me how to problem solve, multitask and trust in my own abilities. The Rose also gave me a love and passion for children’s theatre. After working at The Rose, I relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and started working as the Assistant Props Master at Point Park University's Pittsburgh Playhouse. It was my job to instruct student apprentices while working in the shop to prop a large number of professional and student productions.
I am a dedicated and driven professional who is always eager for the chance to learn and grow while being creative.
